Lakshman Jhula

I am spending the month of March living and practicing yoga in a town called Lakshman Jhula, one of two riverside communities (the other is Ram Jhula) where most people stay in Rishikesh.

I arrived before sunrise about a week ago after a terribly uncomfortable overnight bus ride from Delhi. I had booked a room in a guesthouse but didn't really know where it was or how to get there. I am finding that things like this have a way of sorting themselves out quite smoothly. I might have to wait around a bit but so long as I don't let myself worry too much I usually get where I need to go or else somewhere even better.

It took me a few days to transition to Rishikesh after my month in Goa. Here it is sunny and warm in the day but chilly at night. The roads are steep and hilly and there are no palm trees. I missed the coconuts, the warm ocean waves, and walking around with bare shoulders and knees. But I am coming to love it here.

Lakshman Jhula spreads over both banks of the Ganges river (here they call it the Gangha) with a beautiful bridge connecting the two halves. There are loads of Shiva temples and ashrams everywhere and people come from all over the world to study meditation, yoga, Ayurveda, Sanskrit, etc. I am studying Ashtanga with Louise Ellis and loving it. More about that in another post.

I've got a great place to live in a guesthouse that is also the home of the family that runs it. I've got a bedroom, bathroom (with hot water and good water pressure!), and kitchen (including a stove with a single burner) sort of like a little apartment, all for just under $8 a night. It's not all that often that you can find a room for rent with a kitchen so I am blessed. Now I am praying for more friends and more magic...

  3. Dearest Julia,

I love what you say about having patience and trust and allowing things to work themselves out -- it has stayed in my mind since reading it last Friday. I really needed to hear that right now.

    You are so wise.

    Love,

    Dad

  4. Thanks for sharing real pictures. Located in the foothills of the majestic Himalayas, Rishikesh is settled in the picturesque state of Uttarakhand. Just 225 kms from New Delhi, Rishikesh is perfect for a weekend trip where you can indulge yourself in a variety of adventure sports like rafting, hiking, bungee jumping etc. Check out more about Lakshman Jhula.
